Welcome to NORTHERN HERITAGE and our shared journey into the “heritage” of Prince George and Northern BC. Let me introduce myself, this newsletter and what you can expect as a subscriber…..
The Heritage Professional
My name is AYESHA PAMELA ROGERS. I was born and grew up in Vancouver and left to travel in 1972. I spent 50 years abroad pursuing further education, having a family, and working as an archaeologist and heritage consultant all over Asia.
After half a century I returned to settle in Prince George. The change has been drastic; life is fundamentally different in every conceivable way. Faced with serious culture shock, I have resorted to the same approach I used while living all those years in other people’s countries —- studying and absorbing the local culture to understand the new place and to find my place in it.
Northern Heritage Newsletter
This newsletter is a big part of that process. I am not an expert in local archaeology, history or heritage, but I’ve had decades of experience in identifying, working with and developing heritage. From prehistory to modern, in historic cities, towns and landscapes, using up-to-date theory, methods and skills. In every case the aim has been to involve local communities in highlighting the “heritage” that matters to them and to give “heritage” a new and revitalized meaning and function in contemporary society.
In this newsletter I want to delve into what “heritage” means to residents of this area — from First Nations members to long-term settlers, to recent arrivals from other parts of Canada and immigrants from overseas. What heritage can bind us together? or divide us? How is heritage defined, protected and managed here? How and should we paint a bigger heritage picture for PG and the North that includes and protects more places and intangible activities with special meaning? How can we give heritage a meaningful function within the community and enable it to play its central role in sustainable planning and development? What can we learn from the experience of other communities in Canada and abroad where innovative approaches have been successfully used?
